Politics & Economics Panel

This year the ‘Politics and Economics Panel’ will focus on Europe’s contemporary issues and the potential resolutions to these matters. How, and by whom, will our future be shaped? As Europe and the rest of the world tremble due to both economic and ecological crises, popular uprisings and protests are becoming an ever more present constituent of our day-to-day reality. Not only do they stimulate radical ideas; they also constitute a direct analogy of the current state of our neoliberal democracy. In this year’s panel, we will try to dismantle and examine present-day issues in light of the topic: “The future of the European economy in the face of the dawn of liberal democracy”. If you are interested in the conversation, join us and seek inspiration amongst our array of esteemed guests and renowned speakers.

What would you actually describe as fashion and design? On one hand, it is a purely creative process that designers employ to make a piece of art. On the other, it’s business which aims to add value and promote what designers create. But, it could also be new technology and engineers in search of functional solutions and creating new disruptive products. The best part about our panel is that we will try to grasp all these perspectives and understand how all those different fields come together in a creative economy. Our speakers will try to assess what is the potential of this creative industry in Poland? How does it reflect the global creative scene? And what are the upcoming trends? Finally, referring to this year’s edition theme of sustainability: how do these creative industries adapt to make a positive impact? Stay tuned to discover our amazing speakers!

Climate & Suistanability Panel

“For 68% of the Polish population, environmental protection is more important than economic growth”. According to the ‘UN World Commission on Environment and Development’, sustainability can be defined as: “the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Henceforth - in accordance with the provided definition - we must balance the need for social progress and economic growth with the preservation and reinforcement of our natural environment. The rapidly increasing pace of our development, consumption and waist production, in addition with our mismanagement of natural resources, leave us greatly susceptible to both environmental degradation and resource exhaustion. Despite the clearly visible negative effects of human activity, economic growth, nonetheless, overshadows environmental concerns, telling our plant to basically “put a sock in it and man up”. At UCL Leaders, our speakers will voice varied opinions concerning this issue while addressing the matters of, e.g., Is sustainability and economic growth mutually exclusive? Are Polish businesses truly ready to implement sustainability into their short and long term development strategies? Be sure to stay tuned and don’t let the amazing opportunity of pre-meeting our panellists whisk-by! You seriously don’t want to miss it!

Science & Technology Panel

Would it surprise you if we told you that looking into modern algorithms reveals ethical implications, social mediation, and targeted information consumption on a nearly Orwellian scale? For instance, did you know that more and more often algorithms mediate social processes and how we perceive, understand, and interact among ourselves and with the world? That your Facebook feed, media diet, and purchasing habits are all somewhat predetermined and constitute the reality you live in?

The ideological strife that rages rampant over most current affairs is root communication issues which can be effectively addressed as “Living in a Bubble”. Some news outlets are notoriously liberal, some notoriously conservative and others are straight out fake. Recent events, like the misappropriation of Facebook data or the Cambridge Analytica scandal, have shown us that data algorithms remain a dangerous weapon of misinformation.

We want our panel to focus on the algorithms that process private data, such as face recognition, profiling, etc. There is plenty to talk about, including the threats such technologies pose, whether they are imminent and what we can do to prevent them. To help you digest these topics we will have a wonderful assortment of interesting and accomplished speakers from various backgrounds, who are bound to provide some interesting points and wholesome commentary.

Let’s face the truth - if you are seeing this, the algorithm wants you to come.
